夏四月己亥，季康子卒。公吊焉，降礼。

晋荀瑶帅师伐郑，次于桐丘。郑驷弘请救于齐。齐师将兴，陈成子属孤子三日朝。设乘车两马，系五色焉。召颜涿聚之子晋，曰：“隰之役，而父死焉。以国之多难，未女恤也。今君命女以是邑也，服车而朝，毋废前劳。”乃救郑。及留舒，违谷七里，谷人不知。乃濮，雨，不涉。子思曰：“大国在敝邑之宇下，是以告急。今师不行，恐无及也。”成子衣制，杖戈，立于阪上，马不出者，助之鞭之。知伯闻之，乃还，曰：“我卜伐郑，不卜敌齐。”使谓成子曰：“大夫陈子，陈之自出。陈之不祀，郑之罪也。故寡君使瑶察陈衷焉。谓大夫其恤陈乎？若利本之颠，瑶何有焉？”成子怒曰：“多陵人者皆不在，知伯其能久乎？”

When they arrived at Liushu, they were seven miles away from the valley, but the people in Hudi didn't even notice. When they arrived at Pudi, it was raining and the army refused to cross the river. Zisi said: "The army of the great country is under the eaves of our city, so we are in a hurry. If the army doesn't leave now, I'm afraid it will be too late." Chen Chengzi stood on the hillside wearing a raincoat and leaning on his spear. If the horse refused to come out, he would pull it or beat it with a whip. When Zhibo heard about it, he withdrew his troops and said, "I have predicted an attack on Zheng, but I have not predicted a war with Qi." He sent someone to say to Chen Chengzi: "Master Chenzi, your clan is branched from Chen. Chen's cessation of sacrifices is the fault of Zheng, so I sent me I came to investigate the truth about the destruction of Chen State, and I also want to ask if you are worried about Chen State. If you think that the inversion of the tree trunk is beneficial, what does it have to do with me?" Chen Chengzi said angrily: "People who often bully others will not have good results. How can Zhibo last?"
中行文子告成子曰：“有自晋师告寅者，将为轻车千乘，以厌齐师之门，则可尽也。”成子曰：“寡君命恒曰：‘无及寡，无畏众。’虽过千乘，敢辟之乎？将以子之命告寡君。”文子曰：“吾乃今知所以亡。君子之谋也，始衷终皆举之，而后入焉。今我三不知而入之，不亦难乎？”

中行文子告诉陈成子说：“有一个从晋军中来告诉我的人说，晋军准备出动轻车一千辆，迫击齐军的营门，就可以全部歼灭齐军。”陈成子说：“寡君命令我说：‘不要追赶少数的士卒，不要害怕大批的敌人。’敌军即使超过一千辆战车，岂敢避开他们呢？我将要把您的话报告寡君。”中行文了说：“我到今天才知道自己为什么逃亡在外了。君子谋划一件事，对开始、发展、结果都要考虑到，然后向上报告。现在我对这三方面都不知道，就向上报告，不也是很难了吗？”

Chen Chengzi said: "I have been ordered by the king: 'Don't chase a few soldiers, don't be afraid of a large number of enemies.' Even if the enemy's army exceeds a thousand chariots, How dare you avoid them? I will report your words to you." Zhong Xingwen said: "I didn't know why I was on the run. When a gentleman plans something, he must consider the beginning, development, and results, and then report it to the superior. Isn't it difficult to report it to the superior if I don't know these three aspects?
公患三桓之侈也，欲以诸侯去之。三桓亦患公之妄也，故君臣多间。公游于陵阪，遇孟武伯于孟氏之衢，曰：“请有问于子，余及死乎？”对曰：“臣无由知之。”三问，卒辞不对。公欲以越伐鲁，而去三桓。秋八月甲戌，公如公孙有陉氏，因孙于邾，乃遂如越。国人施公孙有山氏。

After asking three times, his words were wrong. The Duke wanted to attack Lu with Yue, so he went to Sanhuan. In the autumn and eighth month of Jiaxu, Gongsun and Gongsun had the Xing family. Because his grandson was in Zhu, he was like Yue. The countryman Shi Gongsun has the Shan family.
哀公担忧三桓的威胁，想要利用诸侯除掉他们；三桓也担忧哀公的狂妄，所以君臣之间嫌隙很多。哀公在陵坂游玩，在孟氏之衢碰上孟武伯，说：“请问您：我能得到善终吗？”孟武伯回答说：“我没法知道。”问了三次，始终辞谢不回答。哀公想要利用越国攻打鲁国而除掉三桓。秋季，八月初一日，哀公到了公孙有陉氏那里，由此又避居于邾国，后来就乘机去了越国。国内的人们拘捕了公孙有山氏。

Duke Ai was visiting Lingban and met Meng Wubo at Meng's Road. He asked, "May I ask you whether I will have a good death?" Meng Wubo replied, "I have no way of knowing." He asked three times but refused to answer. Duke Ai wanted to use Yue to attack Lu and get rid of Sanhuan. In the autumn, on the first day of the eighth month, Duke Ai went to Gongsun Youxing's place. From there he took refuge in Zhu State, and later took the opportunity to go to Yue State. The people in the country arrested Gongsun Youshan.
悼之四年，晋荀瑶帅师围郑。未至，郑驷弘曰：“知伯愎而好胜，早下之，则可行也。”乃先保南里以待之。知伯入南里，门于桔柣之门。郑人俘酅（xī）魁垒，赂之以知政，闭其口而死。将门，知伯谓赵孟：“入之。”对曰：“主在此。”知伯曰：“恶而无勇，何以为子？”对曰：“以能忍耻，庶无害赵宗乎！”知怕不悛，赵襄子由是惎知伯，遂丧之。知伯贪而愎，故韩、魏反而丧之。

Knowing that he was afraid but not timid, Zhao Xiangzi took Zhi Bo and mourned him. Zhibo was greedy and foolish, so Han and Wei lost him.
悼公四年，晋国的知伯领兵包围郑国，还没有到达，郑国的驷弘说：“知伯刚愎而好胜，我们及早向他表示软弱无能，他就可以退走了。”于是就先守在南里以等候晋军。知伯攻进南里，又攻打桔秩之门。郑国人俘虏了酅魁垒，用卿的地位来引诱他投降，不答应，就把他的嘴塞住而杀死了他。晋军将要攻打城门，知伯对赵孟说：“攻进去！”赵孟说：“主人在这里。”知伯说：“你貌丑而缺乏勇气，为什么成了太子？”赵孟回答说：“因为我能够忍受耻辱，也许对赵氏宗族没有害处吧！”知伯不肯改悔，赵孟因此而憎恨知伯，知伯就想要灭亡赵襄子。知伯贪婪而刚愎自用，所以韩、魏反过来与赵氏合谋灭亡了他。

The Jin army was about to attack the city gate. Zhibo said to Zhao Meng: "Enter!" Zhao Meng said: "The master is here." Zhibo said: "You are ugly and lack courage. Why did you become the prince?" Zhao Meng replied: "Because I can bear the shame, maybe it is not harmful to the Zhao clan!" Zhibo refused to repent, so Zhao Meng hated Zhibo, and Zhibo wanted to destroy Zhao Xiangzi. Zhibo was greedy and willful, so Han and Wei conspired with the Zhao family to destroy him.
